It’s finally here – the new harvest!!!
My favorite olive oil is “Primo” from the Frantoi Cutrera in the Chiaramonte Gulfi region, located in the heart of the Iblei Mountains of Southern Sicily. For this particular oil, the family run business uses a single varietal, the tonda iblea olive (organically farmed), which is hand picked and pressed within 6 hours of harvesting. Their love and dedication will be apparent as soon as you smell and taste this incredible oil. The bouquet is fresh, fruity, grassy with an intense aroma of green tomatoes and fresh herbs. The taste is full bodied and complex with lingering notes of herbs, artichoke, green tomato and a surprising slightly bitter and peppery finish. Don’t be surprised if it makes you cough – that’s from it’s powerful polyphenol antioxidant properties. These polyphenols work to preserve the oil as well as the bodies of those who consume it!
It’s no surprise that the prestigious Gambero Rosso magazine has awarded the Frantoi Cutrera the Best Mill of 2011 prize.
